For the most part, trail conditions were unremarkable.  A fair of amount of foliage overgrowth existed in the first half mile after the intersection of the Thomas Divide Trial and the Indian Creek Motor Trail; however, the portion of the trial across the Thomas Divide after that was a very pleasant woods walk with limited view to either side of the ridge.   On the other hand, the portion of the Deeplow Gap Trail from the Thomas Divide Trial to the Indian Creek Motor Trail had been recently cleared, much made for easier walking.  Along the route, the rhododendron were in bloom.  The entire hike took about seven hours at a pretty good clip, so I would anticipate that we will not be back to the parking lot until around 5:00 p.m. (and possibly later). Hiking up through the forest to the bald was fairly easy, but once we arrived at the AT we were treated with outstanding long range views everywhere we looked. The Spring flowers just added to the enjoyment of the day.  Judy and I had hiked to the bald and AT several times over the past 15 years and we both quickly agreed why this hike left us with such great memories.  We encountered quite a few backpackers and small groups on the trail accompanied by their four footed pet. The expansive views, cool high-altitude, fraser firs, red spruces make this an enjoyable hike. Poles are recommended because of this steep downhill. Then the trail is almost flat to Big Ridge Overlook.  We will leave cars at the Big Ridge Overlook and drive to the Pisgah Inn, where we will begin the hike. At times it feels like you’re in an ancient forest. I’ve previously been on that section of the MST and Little Sam, of course, but it had been a long time. The first mile or so is an easy to moderate climb on a rocky trail with lots of roots, definitely have to pay attention. The rest of the hike will be a really nice walk in the woods, a few sunny spots though still mostly in the shade which is appreciated in July. The trail is mostly above 5000 ft. and though probably humid to a degree in the summer, the temps will be lower than in Asheville. The detour to Devils Courthouse (~.7 mi.) off the MST involves a short climb to the lookout, could be crowded with tourists, but still worth it! We noticed a new sign for that intersection, a good thing for those unaware. The MST and Little Sam portions of the trail often feel magical and ‘old’ as we wander on skinny trails amongst thick laurel and balsam. The Flat Laurel creek trail portion is flat and wider, more populated. It runs by the creek sometimes but when we were there, parts of the creek were very low and appeared dry due to the drought. The walk back to the cars will likely be partially in the sun but not for very long. From there, the trail makes a short (less than half mile) but steep uphill to Lovers Leap. We’ll take it slowly, with time for resting and photos of the beautiful valley below before returning to town on the Lovers Leap Loop Trail. As Donna and I started on the MST, we heard the sound of   weed trimmers off in the distance and soon realized that the trails were overgrown and in bad need of maintenance. We waded through the tall grasses and came upon the first two trail maintainers. It was wonderful to pass through the area they had just cut back. We continued on and I was having thoughts of turning around. We came upon another trail maintainer (CMC), and he chatted with us for a bit. I thanked him profusely as this was such a good example of how much we depend upon their volunteer work. We continued on and missed the trail to Big Butt as we were carefully watching our feet. My All trails beeped at me and we found the trail, grown over. This slowed us down substantially.\r\nAfter lunch at Big Butt, we went down and still found the CMC maintainer hard at work. His goal was to get to the steps. Much to our relief, he said the rest of the way had been finished so our trip back was much easier. The parking area is small, maybe capacity for 5 vehicles. From here we could see Mountain Light \r\nSanctuary on the other side of Walker Branch Creek. We also saw remains from a bridge that had been washed down the creek by Helene. This is a challenging hike, more so than I expected. For 3.25 miles we steadily climbed uphill on a trail with lots of rocks and washouts . This is where all of the elevation gain is on the hike. The next two miles, in contrast, are quite level. However, this Laurel Gap Trail is an old forest road that clearly has had no maintenance in a long time. A trail was visible, but we walked through overgrown plants that were wet from last night's rain and included nettles (stinging and wood), blackberry, monarda (bee balm) and blooming Turk's Cap Lily. It was very beautiful, and some were taller than I. There is no good open space along here to sit, so we stood for a quick snack break. Then the turn onto Bear Pen trail heads back down, at times very steeply. Close to the bottom I stepped on an old log, agitating yellow jackets, and was stung twice. Jim, who was right behind me, was stung four times. We saw evidence of recent landslides, probably from Helene. This is a good hike for adventurous people! It is shady almost the entire hike. Poles are highly recommended. Also consider pants to protect from stinging nettles and briers. There are several water crossings; most can be navigated via rock hops. But if you wear trail runners rather than boots, be prepared for wet feet as these crossings are not easy. I measured slightly over 8 miles and 1900' ascent. This hike is the same as CMC#464 which I co-led with Kay H 3 years ago, except this hike #117 includes an additional .8 miles to include climbing to the top of Craggy Dome (6079'). We drove through some thick fog to reach Walker Knob Overlook. But the cooler temperatures here felt refreshing. Trail maintainers had been weed whacking on the MST recently and the trail was in great shape. It undulates up and down quite a bit. We stopped briefly at lunch rock for a snack. Shortly past the Graybeard Overlook we turned left on to the unmaintained small trail up to Craggy Dome. Unlike the MST, no maintenance has been performed on this trail. It is difficult to navigate with plants overtaking the trail and some very high step ups. We turned around about 100' from the tippy top when the encroachment of the plants became extreme.  I will not be leading folks up to Craggy Dome on Sunday. We will hike just to Graybeard Overlook and return. Some things to note: because of heavy rain last night, the trail between Graybeard Overlook and Glassmine Falls Overlook was very wet in places. My trail runner shoes became completely wet. Also because of the rain, Glassmine Falls had water in it! We saw Turks Cap lilies and ghost pipes. And also a short section of tree trunk trimmed to look like a pig. Although we walked through fog and clouds all morning, we had a clear view of the Falls in the afternoon on our return. The hike, including Craggy Dome and our breaks, took us over 6 1/2 hours. Adding a detour to the original trip would have added an extra mile to the original route, and with hot and humid/rainy weather seeming likely on the hike day, I decided to modify the hike route.  The new route will be a little shorter at around 4.5 miles and 400 feet ascent.  \r\n\r\nOn a mostly cloudy warm day I headed out the Buckhorn Gap trail to the Twin Falls trail.  On the way it sprinkled a little and I could hear rapid thunder somewhere up near the Blue Ridge parkway.  The storm stayed away and I never felt more than a light sprinkle the whole day.  Most of the short Twin Falls trail is on the other side of the creek, requiring reasonable rock hops to cross.  On the Buckhorn trail, all of the missing bridges have been replaced.  The trail crew did a wonderful job rehabilitating and updating this trail.  As always, the falls were spectacular and I spent some time relaxing in their beauty.  I continued on the Twin Falls trail back to Buckhorn gap and started back to the trailhead.  On the way I stopped at the Avery Creek trail and hiked into Avery Creek falls.  After a few pictures, I returned back to Buckhorn Gap Tr. This high-altitude MST hike starts on Bearpen Gap Trail and turns left onto MST in about a half mile heading towards Wet Camp Gap (passing the turn to MST) a meadow hopefully with wildflowers & blueberries. Backtrack to MST and turn right to a rocky, steep section that climbs the ridge (poles recommended) to emerge in a Balsam Forest that winds down to cross the BRP at Haywood Gap. It was a cool, but humid morning as we traveled down the Bearpen Gap trail. Made a left turn on the MST and continued down the trail listening to the birdsongs in the trees.  This is not a highly traveled trail and gives the feeling of being deep in the woods. Passing the turn on MST, we proceeded to Wet Camp Gap. It’s a pretty meadow with wild Phlox in bloom and blueberries, both past peak. There’s a several nice little campsites tucked back in the trees. Reversing our steps, we went back to continue onto the MST. This section is a steep rocky stretch with large moss-covered rocks (watch for ‘rocking’ rocks). Hiking poles are recommended for the tricky footing. Emerging on top of the ridge, we entered a lovely Balsam forest with soft trail cushioned by years of needles. The trail winds down to cross the BR Parkway at Haywood Gap. The MST turns right here. The trail passes through a deep wooded section with stinging nettle thickly bordering stretches of the trail (long sleeves & pants recommended). The river crossing is an easy rock hop.  The next 3 miles up the mountain is a slog, no views until we reach the trail to the Shining Rock. Right now, it is a slight chance before 2pm, showers likely after 4pm.  I will make a final decision tomorrow afternoon before 6pm. I am not sure that I have ever seen a clearer day in the Park during the summer.\r\n\r\nThe hike itself consists of two different parts.  The first part of the hike utilizes the Appalachian Trail and the Boulevard Trail to access the summit of Mount Kephart (which is more than 6,000 feet high), the Jump Off, and Charlie’s Bunion (the tourist version).  As you can see from the attached photos, the Jump Off and Charlie’s Bunion provide two of the best views available in the Park. The Appalachian Trail, in particular, is both well-maintained and heavily used, so we can expect a lot of company during this part of our hike.\r\n\r\nThe second part of the hike, which is almost six miles in length, involves a steady descent from the Appalachian Trail to Highway 441.  The initial part of the descent utilizes the Sweat Heifer Trail, which, while in generally good condition, is occasionally overgrown, has a very narrow surface in a few places, and has a few blowdowns.  On the Sweat Heifer Trail, one passes a couple of nice small waterfalls, the second of which provides a good place for a rest break.  After the Sweat Heifer Trail reaches the Kephart Shelter, we will travel the rest of the way to Highway 441 on the Kephart Prong Trail, which is essentially an old roadbed along the side of scenic Kephart Prong Creek.  As the trail nears Highway 441, the hiker passes through the remnants of an old Civilian Conservation Corps camp.\r\n\r\nThe hike, while a very beautiful one, is long and will take all day to complete. We did run into the CMC Friday Pisgah Crew who were trimming and weed whacking on one side of the loop. I contacted the crew leaders and was told it has now been trimmed up to Barnett Branch. The other side of the loop is a shared bike trail and not maintained by CMC. Additionally, from the rain, the wood on the walkways and bridges had a slippery coating which made it slow going. On the upside, there were tons of colorful mushrooms to enjoy. About a mile from the end, a storm rolled in and we got soaked through.
