PRD map #780

Scout Report:  Brenda Worley and Mary Beth Gwinn accompanied hike leader Barbara Morgan on a scout of this hike on July 21. The hike is part of the MST and pretty much parallels the parkway southward to Pisgah Inn. It has a round trip length of 9.2 miles, 2000' elevation gain, and is considered difficult. In the hike as scheduled, the group will have lunch at the vicinity of Pisgah Inn, but not at the restaurant there, so bring your lunch as usual. We'll find a nice place to eat near the inn, hopefully with a view of the panorama of mountains there. However, there are cold drinks, ice cream maybe, etc available a the "General Store" there, so bring some money if you want.

In the scout, though, we did the hike to Pisgah Inn and had another car there, so full trip times are estimated. We started at Mills River Valley overlook (milepost 404.5 BRP). We crossed the Parkway at Elk Pasture Gap. After a series of several fairly long climbs we arrived at the parking area for the trail to Mt. Pisgah (not part of the hike as scheduled). Continuing on, we reached the area of Pisgah Inn with approximately 2 1/2 hours of hiking time for our one-way trip. I'd estimate that our return to Westgate on the day of the hike will be between 2:30 and 3:00.

I'd wondered if the proximity of the Parkway would mean lots of road noise on the hike, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was not so. We were treated to lots of Turks' Cap Lillies, Black Cohosh, and other mid-summer wildflowers. There were various fungi that were very pretty, too. The 2000' of elevation gain seems daunting, but except for one climb, it isn't too bad - the terrain is rolling, so not all the climb is at once.

The official meeting place is Westgate at 8:30 for both hikes, but several have planned to meet at the BRP overlook instead at 9:00, so that's fine.

Barbara

Scouting report for hike #369 to be hiked on Saturday 8/15/09
This hike was scouted on 8/9/09. A GPS track measured the hike length as 6 miles, not 8 miles as listed in Lets Go.
Many blueberries were ripe at Sherman's Field and fewer at Wet Camp Gap. Very few were found at Gage Bald.
WARNING! Due to abundant nettles and blackberry bushes along the first half of the hike, shorts should not be worn on this hike. We trimmed the worst of the blackberry bushes, but not all of them. Long pants will make the hike more enjoyable.

Scouted on 8/17/09.  A nice moderate hike with excellent views.  Trail is in good condition, suitable for shorts.  Large quantities of blackberries are along trail, along with a fair amount of blueberries.  Since the actual hike is 12 days after the scout, expect fewer blueberries but probably the same amount of blackberries.  A 30-minute stop  was made for swimming at the swimming hole at the bottom of one of the waterfalls, and will be done on the actual hike, weather permitting. - reported by Bruce Bente

Scout Report: Hike 469 was scouted on Thursday, 8/27. Long pants are recommended because of nettles and other nasty vegetation along the trail.  We will start at Bee Tree Gap instead of Craggy Gardens Visitor Center to reduce car shuttle time. Some sections of the BRP have only one lane open, with traffic light control. To compensate for the reduced distance, the hike will be extended to Ox Creek Rd. on the other end. The total hike will be 8 miles with a climb of about 1500 ft. There may be heavy vegetation on the Bull Gap to Ox Creek Rd. section unless a CMC maintenance crew is able to weed-whack it before the day of the hike. Recommend wearing long pants.
